Jumping in Paleis Het Loo
- Paleis Het Loo, Netherlands
During our week in the Veluwe, we spent an afternoon visiting Paleis Het Loo, near Apeldoorn. The palace was built in the 1680s as a hunting lodge for William III of Orange, a few years before he became King of England. The Dutch royal family used it for three centuries, and it's now a museum with baroque gardens.
When we visited the museum, we saw many portraits of the royal families of Europe (all linked together one way or the other) and we all tried to map it to a royal family tree. I'm no expert in this area, but my fellow Dutchies knew a lot more than I did.
The glass pools we're jumping between are actually the roof of the museum's new underground extension, which opened in 2023 after a long renovation.
And, just in case you were wondering, "loo" doesn't mean what it means in English. It's an old Dutch word for a clearing in the woods, the same one you find in Waterloo or Hengelo. See? You learn something new every day.
The weather was very netherlandish, but hey, we had a great time!
